This weeks random question: What book (or books) would you take with you on vacation? Why?

I think this was asked on a Musing Monday before but always good to revisit things. I would bring whatever JR Ward book I was on at the time and my kindle. Nice thing about the kindle is you can have a whole library at your finger tips.

This weeks random question: So, apparently Amazon is now going to pay its Kindle Unlimited & Select authors by pages read. You can read more about this {here}. What do you think of this? Share your thoughts!

I am really not sure how I feel about this one. Musing Monday has stumped me this time because this could be good or it could be bad. The most important thing if you ask me is that Author’s get paid, they work hard and deserve to be paid for the work they do. I understand breaking up albums and paying for a track by track thing there but can you really do that with a book? I mean really? Then I also have to ask is there a certain amount of time you have to spend on a page? What if you spend to long on the page? There are a lot of questions that need answers for this new page by page thing.

Honestly I am not sure this is a good idea there is just to much that needs to be answered. That said I am not one who is on the big bad amazon train either. I proudly have amazon prime and it saves me a lot of money. I buy my dog food on amazon because its around $7 cheaper then getting it locally and I save on the shipping. When you are feeding more then one dog that money adds up, plus it means I do not have to go out in the blazing heat and spend money on gas for dog food. I do support local business but sometimes you have to be logical.I also love my streaming videos on Amazon and my books. Lets face it most local book stores these days (if you have one) cater to the best sellers and modern romance mostly. If you like niche subjects you won’t find much in the local shops but you can find it on amazon.

Bottom line I suppose this could be good, but it could also be very bad. Authors really just need to be paid.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Last week, I came across someone’s idea to create waterproof books {see it here}. What do you think about this? Good idea, or bad?

This week I am going to share the book I am working on right now. It is one I can listen to while I am crocheting which is nice given the mood I have been in lately for no reading.

VampireinDenial

Like being a sixteen-year-old vampire isn’t hard enough, Tessa’s throwback human genes make her an outcast among her relatives. But try as she might, she can’t get a handle on the vampire lifestyle and all the…blood.

Turning her back on the vamp world, she embraces the human teenage lifestyle—high school, peer pressure and finding a boyfriend. Jared manages to stir something in her blood. He’s smart and fun and oh, so cute. But Tessa’s dream of a having the perfect boyfriend turns into a nightmare when vampires attack the movie theatre and kidnap her date.

Once again, Tessa finds herself torn between the human world and the vampire one. Will blood own out? Can she make peace with who she is as well as what?

What do non-reader friends think about your reading habits? Do they understand? Are they sympathetic? Or are they always trying to get you to “get your nose out of that book?

I don’t have to many non-reader friends because I met a lot of my current friends in book groups. That said however, those who I do have which are not readers are confused by the habit. They never try to get me to stop reading (or crocheting) but they don’t understand reading. My Ex didn’t read much and so he also didn’t have any understanding of why I enjoyed it so much and what I got out of it.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION:Is there a bookshop you absolutely adore? Or, perhaps one you’ve always wanted to visit? What is the name of it, and where is it located?

So to reply to the random question, I love the local Bookmans in Tucson it is so much more then a bookshop it has a bit of everything and I love that. It also welcomes animals to come in the shop! I very much am looking forward to taking some of the crew. I think I will take Watson first because he really needs the confidence building. Petsmart with all the other animals can be a little bit to much for him, he just wants to play with the other animals and they do not always want to say Hello to him and then that upsets him. At Booksmans there is not other animals to contend with and the staff are always so happy to see dogs as are the people in the shop. I have watched and been one of those happy people.

There is also a fantastic range of book shops in London. Some I have been too some I have not yet been too. I am truly in love with all the book shops. Book shops just make me happy. They make me so happy.

Beyond that, what do you do when you are in a reading rut? I love reading and I want to keep on with my reading challenges (which I am so behind on now) but when I am done with work at the end of the day I just don’t seem to want to read right now. I only really want to sit and crochet, I think I am in a full on rut.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION:Do you have a favorite book from childhood? What is it?

The Black Stallion and the whole series is my favorite book from childhood along with all of the Mark Twain books. These were books that really got me interested in reading. It was these books that made me feel a passion for all books.

Book Review: The Queen’s Mistake (In The Court of Henry VIII #2) by Diane Haeger

The Queen’s Mistake (In The Court of Henry VIII #2) by Diane Haeger :

From the author of The Secret Bride, the tragic tale of the fifth wife of Henry VIII?

When the young and beautiful Catherine Howard becomes the fifth wife of the fifty-year-old King Henry VIII, she seems to be on top of the world. Yet her reign is destined to be brief and heartbreaking, as she is forced to do battle with enemies far more powerful and calculating than she could have ever anticipated in a court where one wrong move could mean her undoing. Wanting only love, Catherine is compelled to deny her heart?s desire in favor of her family?s ambition. But in so doing, she unwittingly gives those who sought to bring her down a most effective weapon?her own romantic past.

The Queen?s Mistake is the tragic tale of one passionate and idealistic woman who struggles to negotiate the intrigue of the court and the yearnings of her heart.

Sometimes I read books out of order if they can be stand alone, or I post the reviews out of order. Such is the case I noticed with these two in the Tudor court series. Though it doesn’t really matter because while all in the same court these books are very different.

Katherine Howard is always portrayed as a frivolous little chit who ended up losing her head for being that way. This book manages to give her a little more depth and show things more from her perspective. She was never raised to deal with the dangers of a court like King Henry’s and she while not empty headed was not the brightest girl. Was that really a reason to have her head cut off? I don’t think so.

In this I also liked the way that the relationship with Culpepper was shown, instead of confirming that they actually slept together like a lot of other sources have (the Tudors) they do not in this. Yes they spend time together, even kiss a little she does love him deeply but she did not cheat on Henry once they were married in the physical sense. This was a good read and a different look at one of the lesser known Queens at Henry’s court.

My Gemstone Rating:

What magazines do you subscribe to? Personal ones? Professional ones?

Or do you only/mostly pick up your periodicals at the newsstand?

How do you feel about digital editions versus print?

Do you save the old copies after you read them? Or promptly recycle them?

This is an interesting question. So here we go

I currently subscribe to Cosmo, Glamor and Better Homes and garden. These are clearly personal. I want to subscribe to a crochet magazine but I want to find just the right one. I am sure I will though just gotta keep hitting the craft shop and looking at what they offer.

I get my magazines by subscription because they are cheaper that way. If it is a new one I will get it at the news stand to check out before committing.

Sometimes I save old copies it just depends.
